Annual Observance Marks All Saints’ Sunday

The Annual celebration of All Saints’ Day is so important that it is “transferred” from November 1st to the first Sunday in November. Originally All Saints’ Day included a triduum of events beginning with services on All Hallows’ Eve,  October 31, All Saints’ Day the following morning, and All Souls’ Day on November 2.

The Remembrance of the Faithful Departed was originally part of the observance of All Souls’ Day. Lutherans have adapted an ancient Roman Catholic tradition which focused prayers on All Souls’ Day for the souls still waiting in purgatory while the All Saints’ Day services commemorates the church triumphant of saints in heaven.

During Luther’s lifetime, All Souls’ Day was widely observed and over the decades the day was merged with and often seen as an extension of All Saints’ Day, with many Lutherans still visiting and decorating graves on all the days of Allhallowtide.

The Book of the Dead will be placed in the narthex (or School hallway) beginning Saturday, October 15. All of those from St. John’s who received the ministry of the congregation and her pastors since last All Saints’ Day are automatically included. Others are encouraged to add to the list family members and friends who have died since last All Saints’ Day.
